Auto Barrel Racing rolled back to Dallesport, Washington on October 18th, 2008 for its final event of the ABR's premier season! From the deep south to the North West corner of the United States - AUTO BARREL RACING is officially kicked off in a big way!
Things got rocking around 11am on Saturday morning as drivers showed up for driver's practice at the Dallesport Dragstrip. Beautiful weather and beautiful women were a big part of the show - admittedly ABR girls were a driver distraction throughout the day!
Driver participation nearly doubled since our last competition - and the competition was fierce! One final race ended with less than 1/2 of a second difference on the timeclocks! Here at the ABR we have always welcomed any type of car and encouraged competitors to "Run what you Brung". That saying could not have been more true at our final competition for 2008 - as trucks, Z-Cars, Mazdas, Off-Roaders and more battled it out in Lanes One and Two. Audience participation was up as well - and ABR fans continued to cheer on the drivers even as the weather started to cool off.
On the track however - the competitive spirit never cooled off throughout the day. In fact, one competitor broke his drivers side axel early Saturday morning on a practice run. Undeterred - the driver sourced a replacement and used handtools to pull and replace the the broken part in the pit area. After a day of working on it - he even placed in the qualifying races!
After qualifying - the band RED LIGHT ACCELERATE turned up the heat on the main stage. These guys ROCK! In fact - that is an understatement - they are fantastic with a fitting ABR edgy sound. During the races - local DJ Biggs kept the music fresh with plenty of new music and a few of our signature tunes (including his own take on our staple "Start Me Up").
Overall the event went off without a hitch - we met some fantastic new competitors and came away fired up for the next phase of expansions for AUTO BARREL RACING. Future event plans include Longbeach, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Las Vegas and more. See events.
Competitor Dana Thomas was the big winner - and check out the final times on the board! This was a close race no doubt about it - and Dana (a fitting name for a race car driver) was able to pull it out in the end. Everyone seeks that big check - and the ABR put cash money in Dana's hand that night! Way to go Dana - see you next year!
